Senior Software Engineer

Who we are

Pluto is an early-stage startup with privacy technology that reimagines how users own, share and communicate information on the internet. We are building on core principles of privacy and respect to provide APIs/SDKs to companies that enable them to deliver advanced privacy, security and data ownership to their users, as well as data and communication tools to measure and advance DEI.

We are a venture-backed company at a pivotal and exciting point in our journey. We are a very small, but mighty team, with each person being both thinker and doer.

The opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional software engineer, technologist, and human with good programming principles. You will work closely with our CEO to create, refine, and scale Pluto's backend, database, API, frontend, privacy, and security layers to enhance the digital infrastructure for how companies of the future are run and managed.

Given our stage, we are looking for a thought partner who is passionate about our mission of respect and privacy, and thinks strategically about our future, but who can also formulate and execute on the day-to-day details efficiently and pragmatically. You should embrace the realities of strategic technical debt and strive to maintain a balance between long-term code efficiency and immediate business needs. You should be able to research any problem or area you aren't familiar with, get up to speed quickly, and build it.

What you'll be doing

  • Help build and improve key features and infrastructure to drive our growth and impact
  • Lead a new project reimagining data storing and sharing of personal information
  • Manage, support, and develop a platform to enable rapid iteration and experimentation, leveraging technology to solve multi-faceted data, privacy, and UX challenges at scale
  • Create and maintain documentation in and for the code as well as critical technical decisions; collaborate in code reviews
  • Collaborate with and coach junior more engineers

Who you are

  • A cooperative software engineer who
    • Has 7+ years of professional coding experience or equivalent
    • Has worked with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js)
    • Has a deep knowledge of modern scalable backend frameworks (e.g., Python, Java), as well as best practices in backend design, data analytics/data processing, database design and manipulation (non-relational and relational database experience is a plus; we currently use MongoDB), maintainable code, etc.
    • Has a solid knowledge of algorithms and design patterns
  • A pragmatic technologist and empathetic problem-solver who
    • Has a clever and honest business mind that can help us parlay tough choices between stakeholder needs and impact into a better product
    • Is a dependable self-starter excited to quickly ship features, while improving the overall quality of our code
    • Is able to deliver end-to-end solutions to complex design problems while utilizing best practices and frameworks, but without being ideological about which exact languages or technologies to use
    • Thinks critically and compassionately about real-world issues and the implications of technology for real people, and takes an intentional approach to user-centered design
  • A nimble team player who
    • Thrives in a collaborative, rigorous, decentralized and fast-paced environment
    • Has interest and experience in both being a strong individual contributor and managing engineers as a lead, as well as in mentoring and contributing to an inclusive engineering culture
    • Has excellent communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts
    • Adapts to shifting priorities and is responsive to team members' needs
  • A passionate caring human who
    • Combines brilliance with humility and kindness, and is open to engaging varying perspectives
    • Understands and is committed to our diversity, inclusion, and equity mission (and ideally aligned with our values around climate action and environmental sustainability)

Bonus points

  • Has thought deeply about diversity, inclusion, and equity challenges in business and technology, including but not limited to identity, intersectionality, and algorithmic bias
  • Has experience with self-serve product-led growth and product development
  • Has experience with enterprise-grade CI/CD, defensive programming, data integrations/importing, security or privacy
  • Has a working understanding of data/statistical analysis (predictive analytics, ML and Scala, Java, C++ experience are +s)
